How Low Self-Esteem can Negatively Impact Our Lives
We live in a world that seems to place endless expectations on us. These expectations can come from peers, the media and even from family members. In recent times social media has brought with it an avalanche of ideas which has played a role in making us more aware of these expectations. Coupled with experiences that the individual may have gone through such as bullying and abuse it can lead to a severe case of low self-esteem. To be in a better position to identify a case of low self-esteem perhaps it is best to look at how it impacts our lives.
Alcohol and Substance Abuse
Experts have for long pointed out that alcohol and substance abuse is often triggered by an underlying mental health issue. It is therefore important to address the underlying psychological issues in order to effectively eliminate the alcohol and substance abuse problem. Low self-esteem like other mental health issues causes distress and the abuser seeks out the comfort of drugs or alcohol. The source of distress may come from negative thoughts which give them a sense of isolation, rejection, or feelings of incompetence in various aspects of their personal life.
Getting Out of an Abusive Environment
Psychiatrists have identified low self-esteem as one of the key factors that prevent abuse victims from moving out of an abusive relationship. Many abusers are skillful at manipulating their victim’s thoughts. They make them feel responsible for the abuse they receive. People with low self-esteem may have had negative thoughts even before being exposed to the abuser. However, the physical and psychological torture the victim goes through can also trigger feelings of inadequacy that can become more and more intense with time. For this reason, it is important to ensure that victims get psychological help as soon as the issue has been identified to help address low self-esteem and improve their overall quality of life.
